Trusting in God’s Plan During Times of Transition

Trusting in God’s Plan During Times of Transition

We hear this all the time… to just ‘trust in God’s plan’ – but do we actually do this? And what does trusting in God’s plan look like in our daily lives? These are questions I am constantly asking myself on this topic and I’m sure some of you are as well. It sounds so simple to trust in God’s plan with how often we say it to each other and how often we hear this at church – but disciplining ourselves to actually trust in God’s plan for our lives is anything but simple.

During times of transition is when I most often lose faith in God’s bigger plan. Entering the ‘adult world’ seems to continuously be a time of transition for me – whether it’s with a new job, friendships changing, getting married, etc. Anybody else with me? I’m sure many of you have had similar seasons of transition and man, it’s not easy! I felt called to share a bit of my experience with this, what scriptures I’ve been praying over, and how I have been trying my best to trust in God’s bigger plan for my life and my family.

I have struggled for so long with being a ‘control freak’ and wanting to plan every detail of my life.  Although being a planner often comes in handy, it also causes major anxiety since I am constantly thinking about my future. It is very difficult for me to live my day to day life when I do not know what the next 5 or 10 years looks like. Shoot, I don’t even know what the next hour looks like! And this is exactly why I HAVE to rely on God FIRST and not just myself, my husband, or my family. This is much harder than it sounds, which is why I struggle with this every single day.

What has been helping me lately is picking a scripture each day to pray over. These scriptures may or may not be scriptures relating to God’s plan for our lives, but studying them and praying over them has encouraged me in training my heart to listen to God and fully put my trust in him rather than myself. Cody and I have been learning this a lot lately – that our plans may not line up with God’s plan and we have to open our hearts to listen to what He is commanding us to do.

What I have also been trying to do more is to be honest with God about what I’m truly struggling with and tell Him my real struggles. Yes, he already knows our hearts in and out, but praying about what’s deep in your heart allows you to be more vulnerable and open to listening to what He has planned for you. Will He give you the answer right away and tell you exactly what to do? Maybe, maybe not. But having open, honest and humble conversation through prayer with Him has helped to bring me peace during times of transition.

Do I have a ton of advice on this topic? No, because it literally is an everyday challenge. My hope through bringing attention to this subject is to remind you that when you are in a season of transition that you are not alone and that it is OKAY not to know what plans are ahead for you or your family. I think it it very important to be in conversation with each other about this and support each other during these times. It’s times of transition where we need God the most, but we also need the love and support of friends and family who can be honest with you and share their experience with this and encourage you along the way.

I’d love to hear how you have persevered during times of transition and have trusted in God’s plan. Please comment on this blog post if you have any advice or thoughts! I’d love to be able to share new advice with others and use it myself!

Here are some of the scriptures that I have been praying over recently:

I purposely have been focusing on shorter scriptures because they are easier for me to remember so that I can pray over them throughout my day. Don’t memorize verses well? Guess what? Neither do I! Problem Solved: Write one of these are a notecard and keep it in your purse!

  • Philippians 4: 7 – And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
  • 2 Samuel 7:28 – Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
  • Psalm 31:14 – But I trust in you, LORD; I say, “You are my God.”
  • Proverbs 28:6Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.
  • Psalm 143:8 – Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.
